THE PRODUCT

What husk chips are

Husk chips are pieces of the mature dry coconut husk cut to 10–20 mm. Unlike coir pith (the fine fraction) and coir fiber (the fibrous fraction), chips preserve the original structure of the husk in fragments, with low water holding and high aeration.

Suited to orchids, blueberries and other crops that need an open substrate with fast drainage and limited water holding, and as a drainage layer in containers.

When launched, available natural (unwashed) or washed, to the customer's specification, with the same lot analysis report and QR lot traceability as the rest of the line.

Raw material Mature dry coconut husk (Cocos nucifera L.)
Origin Dry-coconut farms, Brazil
Format 10–20 mm pieces cut from the whole husk
Process Mechanical cutting. No chemicals, no additives
Treatment Natural (unwashed) or washed, to the customer's specification
Status Under development
APPLICATIONS

Who husk chips will be for

01
Plant in coir substrate

Orchids and epiphytes

Substrate with maximum aeration for orchids, bromeliads and other epiphytes that need fast drainage.

02
Soft fruit grown in an open coir substrate

Blueberries

Open, free-draining component for blueberry containers and soft fruit substrates.

03
Coir substrate for drainage

Drainage layer

Drainage base in pots and planters, replacing expanded clay or gravel.

04
Preparing a substrate blend

Substrate blends

Structural and aerating component in substrate formulations, adding macroporosity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Are husk chips available yet?

No. Husk chips are a roadmap product under development, with indicative values pending laboratory validation. Register your interest to be notified when the product goes into production.

What is the difference between chips, coir pith and coir fiber?

Chips preserve the husk's original structure in cut fragments, unlike coir pith (the fine fraction) and coir fiber (the fibrous fraction). This gives low water holding and high aeration, a reference water holding of ~200 ml/L, the lowest in the line.

Which applications will husk chips be suited for?

Orchids and epiphytes, a drainage layer in pots and planters, decorative cover and a structural component in substrate blends.

Will husk chips be natural or washed?

Once launched, the product will be offered natural (unwashed) or washed, to the customer's specification, following the same per-lot measured EC standard as the rest of the Carve line.
