What is a saturated media extract (SME)?

Analysis method where substrate is saturated with deionized water, allowed to equilibrate, and the solution is extracted by vacuum. Used primarily in North American labs. Produces EC and nutrient concentration values between those of the 1:5 and 1:1.5 methods. SME is the standard method recommended by most US extension services for container substrate testing.
