What is washed grade coir?

Coir pith washed with fresh water to reduce soluble salt content. EC after washing: typically 0.4–0.8 mS/cm (1:5 method). Washed coir is suitable for many horticultural applications but may still release potassium and sodium from bound (exchangeable) positions on cation exchange sites over time. For sensitive crops, buffered grade is preferred.

On Carve’s coir pith specification, EC is measured and reported per lot (1:5 method): Natural grade typically 0.8–1.5 mS/cm; Washed, EC reduced by freshwater washing; Buffered, washed plus calcium and magnesium treatment. The EC limit is fixed in the customer’s contract (source: Carve Coir Pith specification).

Where it appears in a spec or lot report. In a complete coir specification, as the processing/salt level (the “surname”) next to the particle size grade.
