What is coir?

General term for the fibrous material obtained from the mesocarp of the coconut fruit (Cocos nucifera). Coir encompasses both the long fibers and the fine pith (dust) produced during mechanical or water-retting extraction. The word derives from the Malayalam kayar, meaning cord. Coir is classified under HS code 5305 for international trade.
