What is the EC 1:5 extract?

Analysis method where one volume of substrate is agitated in five volumes of deionized water, then pH and EC are measured in the liquid extract. Basis of European standards EN 13037 (pH) and EN 13038 (EC), and the official Brazilian method for substrate EC measurement. The higher dilution produces lower EC readings than the 1:1.5 method.

Where it appears in a spec or lot report. On coir specification sheets: EN 13038 (1:5 extract) is the basis for EC specifications in international coir trade.
