What is hydroseeding?

Spraying a slurry of water, seed, fertilizer, fiber mulch and tackifier onto slopes and bare ground from a tank truck fitted with an agitator and pump, to establish vegetation.

Hydroseeding: mix, equipment and limits.

The CASQA construction handbook (fact sheet EC-4) describes hydroseeding as applying a mixture of hydraulic mulch, seed and water, with optional tackifier, compost, mycorrhizal inoculant, fertilizer or soil conditioner. Seed sprayed without mulch gives no immediate erosion control, so a stand-alone hydroseed application should be followed by straw mulch, a rolled erosion control product such as an erosion control blanket, or a compost blanket. The same sheet lists limits: steep slopes prone to rill erosion, dry periods without irrigation, very compact soils, and mulch applied at rates high enough to inhibit germination.

Brazilian road specification DNIT 102/2009-ES (item 5.2) describes the equipment as a spray truck with a tank and an agitator shaft that keeps seed, water, mulch, adhesive and fertilizer mixed, discharged by a high-pressure pump; the mulch named is wood sawdust or rice straw at 3 t/ha.
