What is an erosion control blanket?

Coir glossary · Updated 2026-09-25 · Also in Português →

Rolled mat of plant fibers (coir, straw or a blend) held together by stitching and netting, laid and stapled over slopes and banks to protect bare soil from rain and runoff until vegetation establishes. The Brazilian road standard DNIT 074/2006-ES calls it a biodegradable blanket (manta biodegradável).

Erosion control blanket: definition and classes.

US drainage manuals define an erosion control blanket (ECB) as a temporary degradable rolled erosion control product (RECP) made of processed natural or polymer fibers mechanically, structurally or chemically bound together to form a continuous matrix (MHFD EC-6). The classification used in US specifications groups temporary RECPs by functional longevity: about 3 months (Type 1), 12 months (Type 2), 24 months (Type 3) and 36 months (Type 4). Types 3 and 4 call for slow-degrading natural or polymer fibers or yarns. Coir is listed among the fibers used, alongside straw, jute, wood excelsior and polymers (SUDAS 7E-5). Performance on a slope under rainfall is tested to ASTM D6459.

In Brazil, DNIT 074/2006-ES (item 3.7) defines biodegradable blankets as industrial products of dried plant fibers, grass or coconut, interlaced by industrial stitching or biological adhesives. Open-weave versions are classed as biodegradable nets (item 3.9). DNIT 102/2009-ES lists both among the special devices for erosion control on road slopes.
