German term meaning “peat phase-out.” The BMEL (German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture) national strategy targets ending peat use in hobby/retail growing media by 2026 and significantly reducing professional peat use by 2030 (voluntary targets). Germany is the EU’s largest hobby substrate market, and the Torfausstieg creates additional demand for coir and other renewable alternatives.
