What is a coir doormat?

Entrance mat made of coconut fiber, either woven from coir yarn or tufted (coir yarn inserted into a PVC or latex backing), used at building entrances to clean shoe soles.

Coir doormat: types and standards.

ISO 11861:1999 (Textile floor coverings — Coir mats — Types and specification) specifies requirements for mats produced from coir fibre, with or without pile. The Indian series IS 11420 (Parts 1–9, 1985) sorts mats by construction: corridor mats; creel, bit, fibre and rod door mats; gymnasia, loop, mesh, rope and sinnet mats. The coir yarns used carry the name of their region of origin, such as Anjengo, Aratory, Beach and Vycome. IS 17734:2022 covers tufted coir mats on a PVC or latex backing.

Embrapa lists doormats among the industrial uses of coconut fiber, alongside mats, ropes, rugs, brushes and brooms.
