What is decortication?

Mechanical separation of coir fiber from the coconut husk. In dry processing, the husk is fed through a decorticating machine that beats and tears the mesocarp tissue apart, separating long fibers from pith. Decortication is the primary extraction step and its intensity determines the fiber-to-pith ratio and the length distribution of the resulting fiber.
