Long fiber extracted from dry coconut husk. Used in erosion control blankets, geotextiles, mattress manufacturing, horticultural substrate blends and industrial applications.

WHY IMPORT FROM BRAZIL
Six reasons US buyers are sourcing coir from Brazil.

Brazil is a net exporter of coconuts, with 240,000 hectares under coconut palms in the Northeast. The dry-husk processing route (as opposed to retted husk) produces lower-EC coir pith and longer, stronger fiber.

Pecem to Newark in 8 to 9 days. To Savannah or Miami in 10 to 14 days. India and Sri Lanka take 28 to 45 days to reach the same ports. Shorter transit means faster replenishment and lower working capital.[1]

Dry-husk origin
Brazilian coir is extracted from mature dry coconut husk, not from retted (water-soaked) husk. Dry processing yields lower natural EC and preserves fiber integrity. The result is a substrate that requires less washing to reach professional targets.

A shorter route translates to lower freight per container. Asia to US East Coast rates were USD 2,800 to 5,000 per 40 ft container in 2026. Brazil-to-US freight benefits from established trade lanes and shorter distance.[2]

Supply chain resilience
In 2024 and 2025, Middle East tensions forced Asian coir shipments around the Cape of Good Hope, adding 7 to 10 days and 15 to 25 % to freight costs. A Brazilian origin is not exposed to the Suez/Red Sea route risk.[3]

Phytosanitary compliance
Brazil's phytosanitary authority (MAPA) issues certificates recognized by USDA APHIS. Dried, processed coir from Brazil is typically admissible under 7 CFR 319. Carve provides phytosanitary documentation per shipment.[4]

Asian coir prices surged 60 to 70 % compared to January 2024. A geographically diversified supply chain reduces exposure to single-origin price shocks and tariff uncertainty.[5]
How to import coir from Brazil to the United States.

The import process for dried, processed coconut coir from Brazil is straightforward. Below is the typical workflow.

1. Inquiry and specification. Contact Carve with the product (coir pith, fiber or chips), grade (Natural, Washed or Buffered), target EC, volume and delivery port. We respond with a technical data sheet, EC test reports and FOB pricing.

2. Sample and approval. Samples are shipped by courier. Buyers test EC, pH, expansion ratio and contamination levels. Large buyers may request a factory visit to Paraipaba, Ceara.

3. Purchase order and production. Specification is confirmed lot by lot. Each production lot is tested and an EC report is issued before shipping.

4. Logistics. Containers are loaded at Carve's site (90 km from Pecem) and delivered FOB Pecem. Buyer arranges ocean freight or Carve quotes CIF to the destination port. Phytosanitary certificate issued by MAPA.

5. Customs and delivery. US customs clearance under applicable HS code. USDA-CBP inspection at the port of entry. Typical clearance is 1 to 3 business days for compliant shipments.
