Twisted coir fibre: how it is made.
In the process described by the Rubber Research Institute of Sri Lanka (RRISL), coconut fiber is spun into rope with a double twist, which gives it a tight curl. The ropes are steamed in an autoclave, which stabilizes the curl and adds elasticity, then passed through an untwisting machine that yields loose, curled fiber. Results improve the longer the rope rests before untwisting.
To make rubberized coir, a web of curled fiber is sprayed with compounded latex on both faces and dried at 60–70 °C; the sheets are stacked, hot-pressed to thickness and vulcanized at about 120 °C for roughly one and a half hours (RRISL). Embrapa lists rubberized coconut fiber among the materials for spring mattresses, car upholstery and cushions.
